Host Cup Ignites Hope and Faith Among Refugees Through Football

At a refugee camp on the Uganda-South Sudan border, the 5th Host Cup final is under way. All 40 teams from the preliminaries watch, as cheers from the crowd roar. Run by Taiwan’s Chinese Mission Alliance, the football cup gathers young players and members from 297 “Tentmaking Churches.” With over 2,000 people, it’s the refugee camp’s biggest annual event. What began with seeing children playing with stones as makeshift balls, the Host Ministry, over time, organized men’s, women’s and youth football teams. Through football ministry, the Gospel has spread widely. On the morning of the Host Cup, Taiwan’s Chinese Mission hosted the “We Want to Go Home” conference, marking ten years of faithful ministry to South Sudanese refugees with consistent lessons and support. “Life is mission, and mission is life.” Along the South Sudan border, the Chinese Missionary Alliance “Host of Armies” walks with refugees through football training and discipleship. From the football field to the tent churches, they serve the smallest and most vulnerable families —allowing the love of Christ to roll on, like a football, throughout the community.
